Some years ago, I made my first trip to France. I wanted to travel from Paris down to the Riviera and I read up as much as I could about routes, places of interest along the way and hidden gems that aren’t too well advertised. I quickly discovered that my planned itinerary was far too full and I missed out on some major attractions. To give you an example, we visited a town called Le-Puy-en-Velay and with the little time available to us, walked up the St Michel monastery built on a volcanic peak. It was only when I returned home that I discovered that the Le-Puy-en-Velay Cathedral of Notre Dame holds one of Europe’s black Madonnas. I travelled 1000’s of kilometres only to find that I had missed such a treasure! I have other examples but my point here is that it’s always best to use a local guide to show you around in order to get the best out of your visit.
