WALK Cape Town

There’s an old African adage: If you drive through Africa, you see the land, but if you walk, you feel Africa’s pulse through the soles of your shoes

Our walking tours cover various aspects of life, past and present, in Cape Town. Experience the city where several cultures meet and where historic events have left behind a unique architecture, people and cuisine.

Option one: Historic Tour

TOUR DESCRIPTION
This tour gives the visitor an idea of Cape Town life over the last few centuries. We begin our tour with a brief history and then we move through the city where we stop at several points of interest, chat to the locals and sample a local delicacy. Throughout the duration of the tour, we show you the influences on Cape Town by the Dutch, the indigenous Khoisan, the slave trade, the British and later the Apartheid regime. This is a fascinating walk through time and events that shaped our city and its people.

THE ITINERARY

  • We meet outside the Slave Lodge in the centre of Cape Town at the designated times (see Tour Times & Dates below)
  • We travel through the Company’s Garden, stopping at various points of interest
  • Sample a local delicacy
  • We discuss the Apartheid era and the real impact it had on South African citizens
  • Viewing of the St George’s Cathedral, the Mother Church, then on to Spin street to view the slave memorials
  • We pass the flower sellers and learn of their centuries-old history
  • On to City Hall (via a popular eating house) and some info on Nelson Mandela’s first speech to the people
  • We walk up to Greenmarket Square to amble through the bustling market and to view the Old Town House
  • Return to the Slave Lodge where the tour ends

WHAT YOU NEED
Please ensure that you bring along sunblock, a hat, a bag to safely store your precious items and wear comfortable shoes. Before booking, please advise us if you are averse to any particular foodstuffs.

WHAT WE DO & DON’T OFFER
We offer a free bottle of spring water; a local delicacy tasting and photographs of the day will be uploaded to Facebook, if required. Parties of 6 or more pay a reduced fee. Any donations & transfers, gratuities, refreshments, and lunches are for your own account.

TOUR TIMES & DATES
The tour takes between 1 hour and 1.5 hours to complete and runs every Monday to Friday at 9am, 11am and 1pm. If required, Saturday tours can be organised.

NOTE: You may have heard that the city is offering free tours, so why pay for a tour? We tend to tip rather generously when receiving something for free, perhaps this is out of guilt? Whatever the reason, the ‘free’ tour is likely to cost you more in a tip than our fixed R120 fee (which incidentally includes a refreshment and delicacy tasting).
